Dentistry for children or Pediatric Dentistry covers many things and range of different ages as your child grows. Here at Brooklin Village Dental Care, our pediatric dentist can help your child through the stages of their life.
Brushing baby teeth
As parents, you need to help your child learn good oral hygiene starting when they are babies. You can start before they have teeth actually, buy a soft bristle baby toothbrush and do not use toothpaste, brush their gums softly morning and night.
Generally, around the age of 2 or 3 when they have their baby teeth take them to the dentist for a checkup. At that point, the dentist or hygienist can help make sure they are brushing and learning to floss properly.
The dentist is also the person to help you, the parent, encourage your child to give up bad childhood habits of thumb sucking or pacifiers. The habits can cause issues with the child’s dental bite making it necessary later for braces.
The pediatric dentist is able to assess whether your child needs more fluoride or not. This is another part of dentistry for kids that as parents you need to be a part of so that you understand just how much fluoride your child needs.
Early tooth decay
If you are taking your child to the dentist regularly, the dentist will catch any tooth decay as it begins. There are many things that contribute to early tooth decay in children: including
• Mothers milk
• Cow’s milk
All these have natural sugars in and if you put your child to bed with a bottle of milk or the child does not rinse their mouth before bed then it lays on the teeth all night which can cause tooth decay to begin.
