Brooklin Village Dental Care has emergency appointments, Saturday, and evening appointments available, but if you’re wondering how to best deal with a dental emergency until we see you, please keep reading.
Here are a few of the most common dental emergencies and recommendations on what you can do at home before you see the dentist.
Use warm water to clean your mouth and floss to eliminate any debris between the teeth. If there is swelling present, use a cold pack on the outside of the mouth. You can also take an analgesic orally until you can get to your emergency appointment, but do not place any analgesic against the gum in the area of the tooth since it could cause damage to the gum.
Rinse your mouth to remove any pieces of broken or chipped tooth. If there is any bleeding, apply gauze to the region for around 10 minutes to help reduce or stop the bleeding. You can also use an ice pack on the outer mouth area to keep the swelling down.
Apply an ice pack to the outer surface of your mouth in the area that is affected, take acetaminophen for the pain, and call your dentist.
If a crown comes off a tooth, you can use some oil of clove that’s been applied to a cotton swab to ease the pain. If you have the crown, you can use an over-the-counter dental bonding adhesive to replace the crown until you can see your dentist.
Rinse with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of table salt that’s been dissolved in 8 ounces of water) several times a day until your dentist can see you.
Control the bleeding by rinsing with a mild salt water mixture (see mixing ratio above) and the holding a moist pad or a teabag to the area applying gentle pressure to stop the bleeding for about 15 minutes. If the bleeding does not stop, you’ll need to go to an emergency room instead of making an emergency dental appointment.
