Extractions/Wisdom Teeth Removal

If you’re experiencing pain in your mouth and suspect that it may be your wisdom teeth, here’s some information to answer some of the questions you may have. Brooklin Village Dental Care has emergency appointments and Saturday and evening appointments available if you have more questions or seek treatment for your pain.

Understanding What Wisdom Teeth Are

Wisdom teeth usually begin to come in between the ages of 17 and 25; however, they can also come in at any age – each case is unique. Your wisdom teeth are the last of your molars to come in and are comprised of two teeth on the top of your mouth and two teeth on the bottom of your mouth – all located in the rear. When your wisdom teeth do not come in naturally, they can become impacted.

Taking an Impacted Wisdom Tooth into Consideration

Impacted wisdom teeth fail to come in due to not having enough room in the mouth.

Generally, if you have impacted wisdom teeth, you will need to have them removed. Signs of impacted wisdom teeth are swollen gums, tender gums, and a point of the tooth sticking out from your gum.

The third sign is the trickiest because when the point begins to stick through the gum and food gets caught under the gum, it can lead to infections or abscesses which can then lead to tooth decay that will usually affect more than just the wisdom teeth.

What to Expect During the Extraction Process

A lot of patients are anxious about the extraction process for wisdom teeth. Because the caring, professional staff here at Brooklin Village Dental Care believe that understanding the procedure helps to alleviate anxiety, we’ve included an overview of the extraction process for you.

  • Your dentist will first give you an exam which includes x-rays of your teeth to see where the wisdom teeth are located and determine whether or not they’re impacted.
  • Once the dentist makes the diagnosis, you will be set up with an appointment date to have the wisdom teeth extracted.
  • During the appointment for extraction, your dentist will give you the appropriate anesthesia for a pain-free experience. After the anesthesia takes effect, the dentist will cut a slit in the gum.
  • From that cut, the tooth will be split into pieces for easy extraction, and any bone that needs to be removed will be.
  • Once the teeth are removed, the area will be cleaned and then stitched up. When you wake up, you will be given post-op instructions.
