Root Canal Therapy

Has a dental professional recommended that you undergo root canal therapy? Are you feeling anxious because you’ve heard stories from friends, family, or co-workers that the treatment can be scary? We want to assure you that root canal therapy does not cause pain – in fact, the treatment is used to help your pain go away!

You see, when the tissues in the root canal of your tooth become infected or inflamed because of decay or trauma to the tooth, you feel pain. And if the infection is left untreated, it can spread to your jawbone and other parts of your body which can lead to additional complications.

So, what are the symptoms that you should be on the lookout for? The answer is not a simple one, and it will usually involve a visit to a multi-specialty dentist like Brooklin Village Dental Care to assess. But in general, the symptoms can be sharp pain when you bite or chew, a dull ache or pressure in your jaw, or a tenderness and swelling in the gums near the infected tooth.

And if you’re experiencing any type of pain when you eat hot or cold foods, this too can be an indicator that root canal therapy is needed.

Also, it’s important to note that you may sometimes experience intermittent relief from the pain, but this does not mean the infection has gone away. Diagnosis and treatment are still necessary.

Root canal or Endodontic treatment involve first administering a local anesthetic to the tooth and the surrounding area to prevent you from feeling any pain. Your dentist will then remove the infected or affected tissue, including the pulp chamber and root canals of your tooth.

Afterward, the area will be disinfected and sealed to prevent the possibility of future infection of the tooth. In most cases, a dental crown will be also be needed to protect the surface of the tooth.

Most patients are able to resume their normal activities after root canal therapy, but you may experience temporary sensitivity or tenderness around the tooth. This typically subsides rather quickly and can easily be treated with over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen.
