Dentures

Commonly Asked Questions About Dentures

If you have missing teeth or teeth that are so decayed that removal is the only option, dentures are an ideal solution to help you maintain your bite and your quality of life. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions we hear at Brooklin Village Dental Care.

Do all of my teeth need to be pulled?

The answer is that it depends. There are several types of denture appliances that can be used to restore your smile ranging from partial dentures to complete dentures, but your specific need will be determined after a consultation.

What will they feel like when I’m wearing them?

Everyone has different experiences when wearing any type of dental appliance, including dentures, for the first few days or weeks. It will take time and patience, but since they’re worn every day for many hours at a time, we’ve found that patients adjust to them rather quickly.

Will dentures affect the way I pronounce my words?

Since you’ll be experiencing new sensations in your mouth for the first time, there is a small adjustment period that can affect the pronunciation of certain words. We recommend spending time in private reading aloud to help you get used to wearing your dentures and to help build up the new muscles in your mouth that are required to keep them in place.

If dentures will affect my speaking at first, will they also affect my eating?

Because you’ll be developing the muscles in your mouth to accommodate the wearing of dentures, there may be some foods that you’re unable to eat initially. But as with speaking, you’ll learn over time how to accommodate certain foods, so your life is as uninterrupted as possible.

Do I have to take them out at night?

There’s not one perfect answer to this question. It depends on your particular case and what type of dental appliance you’re wearing. But you will know the answer to this question after your initial consultation so you’ll know what to expect long-term.
