Use an electric toothbrush with soft bristles.
Did you know that an electric toothbrush, on average, does a better job at removing plaque from your tooth and gum surfaces than a manual toothbrush? There are a few reasons for this. An electric toothbrush can achieve more brush strokes in 2 minutes of brushing than you can do manually. In addition, an electric toothbrush takes the guesswork out of brushing by doing most of the work for you. The most important thing to remember while using an electric toothbrush is to access all tooth surfaces and slowly move the brush head across your teeth.
Be sure to floss daily, and get the floss below the gum line.
Even with excellent and consistent brushing, half of your tooth surfaces are missed if you aren’t flossing. Toothbrush bristles are too thick to access between your teeth, so flossing is vital to prevent cavities and gum disease. You can use the type of floss you prefer, whether that be manual, floss wands or even water floss. Be sure to access below the gum line with your floss, as that’s where most bacteria accumulate.
Incorporate mouthwash.
Mouthwash helps reduce the overall amount of bacteria in your mouth, reducing gum inflammation. Be sure to select a mouthwash that is approved by the Canadian Dental Association or the American Dental Association and has approved active ingredients. Using mouthwash daily can help prevent gingivitis and even cavities.
Use fluoride in your toothpaste.
Select toothpaste that includes fluoride, as this will help to reduce your risk of cavities. Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps to strengthen the enamel (outer layer) of your teeth. By doing so, bacteria and acids are less able to penetrate through to cause cavities. Be sure not to rinse your mouth with water for at least 30 minutes after using a fluoride product, as this will rinse the fluoride away and reduce its efficiency.
Chew some xylitol gum.
Xylitol is a sugar substitute shown to reduce cavities by altering the type of oral bacteria that accumulates. In other words, xylitol reduces cavity-causing bacteria. Xylitol is added to products such as gum, candies and mouthwash. Using a product containing xylitol daily is recommended for the best results.
Replace your brush/brush head every three months.
Toothbrush bristles wear out over time, and it is recommended to change your brush at least every three months. Be sure also to change it if you are sick or the toothbrush gets dirty.
